What distinguishes 'weak' (narrow) AI from 'strong' AI?

Weak or narrow AI performs one task or a bounded set of tasks (chess, image classification, language translation), while strong AI would match general human cognitive ability across arbitrary tasks and, in some definitions, possess genuine understanding. As John Searle, put it on the record: "According to strong AI, the computer is not merely a tool in the study of the mind; rather, the appropriately programmed computer really is a mind."
