What problem do AI engineers solve that traditional ML engineers don't?

AI engineers, as the role is used today, focus on building applications on top of pre-trained foundation models — prompt design, retrieval, tool use, evaluation, and deployment — whereas traditional ML engineers focus on training and shipping custom models from data.
